Just some friendly advice
If you are looking for a new laptop DO NOT under any circumstances buy an Asus Zenbook.
I have been testing them for The Star and they are $1000 pieces of shit.
They look cool, like a Macbook Air.... but have severe design flaws.

Re: Just some friendly advice
Not to mention that you can get a quad-core 2.5 with 6GB of Ram and Nvidia with a big enough HD for $600 if you shop around.....like @ TigerDirect.com
I look at them all the time waiting for the best for the lowest price.
They tend to drop the price when a new version comes out.
I know one thing....older laptops run so hot you have to lay em on a block of ice to run the way I do.
I just added a Acer desktop w/quad-core 3.1 and 4GB ram (can add more) Win7 and Nvidia that I just use for CERN Alpha tests for the LHC 24/7 and it works perfect but the AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 645 Processor isn't the fastest out there but then I only payed $450 for it.
I am waiting for a laptop with a quad-core over 3.1 and at least 6GB Ram with an Nvidia that I can also use for computations like the GTX 550TI for around $600
Until that comes out I will just use the other 5 desktops I have running wireless now
I am running 3 or the top 4 computers at CERN's LHC Alpha theoretical physics computation project
(and 4 of the top 7) http://lhcathome2.cern.ch/test4theory/top_hosts.php?sort_by=total_credit
This is the list of the ones I use for CERN
http://lhcathome2.cern.ch/test4theory/hosts_user.php?userid=50
I have 2 more for a total of 7 pc's running for the Einstein Project too.

#8 isn't being used for that it was just a test of an old crappy laptop I was repairing for Jr.

Re: Just some friendly advice
I'm going to have to dedicate a machine to your project sometime Magic, I've got a spare desktop just sitting here with no HD doing nothing right now... LOL
Work gave me a Macbook pro to use, (I only use it at work lol, I don't really care for it)
I went out and got a $300 Toshiba with the new dual core AMD and then put 8GB of RAM in it and a 128GB SSD... it's running 7pro and it's a pretty darn nice machine now. about 6 hours of battery life.....
I don't go for high power in a laptop though, I'm after battery life for the most part for the mobile stuff....
The new desktop on the other hand.... it's an absolute fucking beast lol already upgraded that sucker and it's running 16g RAM (I can get up to 32 gs with it) and I couldn't pass up hat 8core AMD CPU for $250 rolling with 64 bit ubuntu on that one with XPro, 7pro AND OSX in virtual boxes...... Still working on this one though need to upgrade the video card to something with 2gb of RAM (trying to decide between Nvidea and ATI on that one) and a TV tuner card that supports 'nix out of the box...
But that damn Asus is driving me nuts.... the fucking thing won't even PXE boot natively..... worthless in a corporate environment imho.. it has a SSD but it's integrated into the MB... 4GBs of Ram installed. and EVERY screw internally has the "warrenty void if seal is broken" tape on every single screw, memory stick, battery etc...... The thing is basically a disposable, shiny netbook and nothing else.

Re: Just some friendly advice
Yeah I am anti-Mac so I will never use one and that Azus sound like it isn't something you can depend on but It probably could run Einsteins if you leave it plugged in and make sure it is running cool enough (SpeedFan program)
But I would use an Nvidia on you desktop project and I have that GeForce GTX 550TI overclocked that was on sale one day.
The GeForce GTX 560TI overclocked is even better if you can find a sale price.
The ones that are any better cost too damn much right now.
The GTX 460 (336 cores)
Of course you have to consider these card are power hungry if you run them like we do.
My 550TI overclocked is @ 75watts
It is these extra hubdreds of processong cores we get by using these Nvidia's (the Tesla is a bit expensive)
Here is a chart we have.

Hell the only reason I go to Best Buy anymore is so I can make fun of the Geek Squad. I've listened to them give people a complete line of crap on why they should just buy a new computer and then handed the person a business card as soon as they walked away and let them know it was a pretty easy and inexpensive fix....
I don't like that crooked place lol..
I remember I was looking for a stick of RAM in a pinch for a customer and stopped in there and they were double the price I could get the same thing anywhere else.
Guy found out I was a Tech and took 50% off the price no questions asked.

What is it with those chicks, anyway? They all wear that nasty Hi-Def makeup, you can scrap it off with a spoon...looks totally fake and nasty.

How are you doing with the pc building project??
You getting ready to run some theoretical physics computations.....and maybe more???
My son got his old laptop back from me that I was using for that as I tested it after fixing all the registry errors and 70 virus/malware/trojans so it runs good for an old Dell running my least favorite Vista Home OS
Main problem with it now is it could use a 2GB Ram upgrade because it came with less than 1GB
And the old beast is heavy and runs hot so I always had it sitting on one of my 85lb dumbells with a small fan under it to keep it as cool as it will get.
If it was mine I would also give it a good old F 11
He won't do that because he has it full of that shit they call music these days
DJ noise
Let me know when you are ready .....I could use another pc task cruncher
