Post  Magic 7/10/2012, 7:07 pm

Crap I can barely type right now........

Up and down the ladder for about 6 hours.

Ripped off another 6X8ft section of old cedar shakes and carried the 2 pieces of plywood up and nailed them down and then got back on the ground and picked up all the shakes that are full of nails and put them in a pile to burn some day.

So I have a 6X 12ft section with old shakes gone and bug sprayed the crap out of the insulation and carried that plywood up the ladder wtf

Still have another 6X8 on this side to rip off all the old shakes and then roll out the tar paper and then get some power out there so I can screw in all the sheet metal screws and the metal roofing......then the same on the others side wtf

I hurt from my neck down to my toes.......come on vicodin do your job.

I have a beer but if I drink one I will just fall asleep and the sun is still out here.....

You are supposed to take your vicodin, drink a beer THEN climb up on the roof hellyes

Atleast thats the way the construction boys did it back east.

What are your plans for the old barn?

UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7 Empty Re: UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7

The building sits over the well so the downstairs half is the pump house with that spot next to it where I park the John Deere and the entire upstairs was my kids bedroom when he was still living here (and is one of the BC members)

Now the upstairs is just where I have a couple things stored up there and ALL the rest is another place for Joyce to stash stuff.

The roof would not make it through another winter and that room upsatirs is sheetrocked and carpet and all her stuff so it would not be good if I let the rain and snow get in there and destroy the building.

The peak of that roof is 25ft and I can't actually climb on the roof to tear all the old cedar off so I have to reach from the ladder all the way to the peak to pull them up and pull the nails.

I have bruises all over my arms from doing it so far and I have lots more work.

I hope we don't get rain for another week or more.

Oh and Blue I knew you would be thinking of that song when I used that line clap

Nice old 45

Getting close to noon and I'm trying to get outta bed and back to work on that project so I can maybe even put the tar paper up there on that side today.

UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7 Empty Re: UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7

Post  Magic 7/11/2012, 8:05 pm

8:00 just came back in the house after day 3 up on the roof.......close to 8 hours of pain.....the gov should make terrorists stand on a ladder all day....on those single steps......oh the pain....... wtf

3 hours later......I could get back up after the shower and vicodin to check my pc's so here is a pic of day 3 on the north side of the roof....all old shakes removed and put on the future burn pile.

And I carried some more plywood up the ladder and nailed them down and sprayed the crap out of that part of the roof with bug killer.

Couldn't do the tar paper part so day 4 I will see if I can do that but I have to fix the 115 volt power to the building so I can use the power out there to run the drill to attach the metal roofing to that side of the roof.......220 for the pump but the 115 volt line had the plastic chewed all the way off by some critters a couple summers ago.

Good thing we still aren't getting rain here.......be great if I could finish that side and then see if I will get another 4 or 5 days more sun so I can do the same thing on the roof on the other side......since it faces the sun all the time the shakes may come off a bit easier......but I doubt it.

I sure hope I actually saved lots of cash doing this myself wtf

This picture was from me standing on an alder log that is about 8ft above my creek and the waterfall.....by that time I was lucky not to fall off there into the sticker bushes and nettles.

Isnt it fun standing on one single wrung on a ladder? When we had to treat the logs thats what I would have to do, no way in hell I would step off the ladder onto the roof.

I should have sent Drew out to you, he would run around on our roof with no problems, and it was a 12, 12 pitch.

Yeah I'm not sure what the slope is but it is close to 12 since when I lay my rubber handle hammer on the plywood it likes to slide off.

The only time I will be climbing up there is to screw down the last piece at the peak and that piece of felt.

Today was day #4 and I got the power running out there, put down the 46ft of felt and then screwed down the 7 pieces of metal roofing so the north side is pretty much done.......just need a 1X4 X 16ft piece that goes under the bottom edge and hen a few more screws on the lower edge.

But NOW I have to do the front side of the roof where the sun beats on it all day sunny

I have the UV-30 sun block but forgot about doing that and once I start I hate to do more than stop for something cold to drink (I am having my beer right now almost 9:00)

Glad I am half way though.

The front is a bit higher and a tree in the way and I will have to haul all the shakes around behind to the pile too so it will be another 4 hard ass days.........but when it's finished I will get to look at it every day until the end of time.........and in the middle of this I will have to mow the damn lawn wtf

But thanks again for that 45 of Up On the Roof on that cool 45 Norm......I play it at the end of the day smile

Well at 4:20am there is the loudest boom of thunder I have ever heard!

The weatherclowns said I had another week of sunshine but it is almost noon and still thunder and lightning and RAIN

Good thing I didn't stop until I put all the metal up on the north side of that roof.

Hopefully the rain isn't getting in at the peak where the old and the new roof meet.

Shit, my luck there won't be another week without rain here bs

Post  Magic 7/13/2012, 10:09 pm

End of day 4 at about 7:30 I finished screwing down the metal roof (she tried to make me stop after just 2 pieces) and since that night it has been sun-rain-thunder and lighting almost non-stop

I was just outside in the dark watching the different types of lightning.

So that is one way to get the day off......still climbed the ladder and tossed an old cedar shake cap to cover one spot where I could see rain maybe sneaking in.......hope this stops and gives me a good 5 days straight so I can do the south side of this roof in the sky.

Still fish in there since I only feed them and haven't hooked one in years!

It just looks like the woods in the background of that pic.........behind me when I take the pic is the field on the other side of the creek where I planted 30 Sequoia's over the years and on the other side is the loop on my driveway and the house.

THe creek runs about 20 ft behind that building and then the field with the Sequoias......still more field than trees but they are getting bigger.

(I'm on the laptop so I will show the other angle later)

Still thunder and lightning here and some rain so I get another day off........ok since it is hard to get out of bed after the 4 days of getting half done with this project in the hot sunshine wtf

But Blue gave me another golden oldie to play smile

UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7 Empty Re: UP ON THE ROOF.......Day 7

Post  Magic 7/18/2012, 2:49 am

Well now I have 2 days in working on the front side of this roof project.

Hot sun and all day torture (I never take a break)

Today I decided to switch to the other end because I can line it up a bit more square that way since it only takes a half inch error to really screw it up after 5 sheets of plywood and the 7 pieces of metal roofing.

So I tore off a 6X8 section of old shakes and then once again carried these 2 sheets of plywood up the ladder and onto the roof wtf

Nailed and screw it down and then I put the top piece of tar paper down in case it rains again.

Putting that top piece of tar paper up is the hardest bleeping part.

I try to slide it under the metal roofing on the other side and bend it towards the side I am doing......the damn BS refuses to slide under it more than 3 inches AND the bleeping wind blew it off 3 times and the staple gun off the roof once since this angle is steep.

(btw I used the real words when this was going on not any "bleeps" )

So it may take 2 more days to remove those old shakes you can see in the middle section and a couple pieces of plywood and then screw down the last 5 sheets of metal and that 23ft piece that goes on the peek..

And a view of some of the sequoias I planted over the years in the field behind this building and across the creek.

Sounds to me like you need one of two things...

1) The young'un to climb the ladder and do the balancing act while you "coach" him from the lawn chair under the tree in the shade

or

2) A round-trip ticket from/to Chicago for a certain Bear fan to take over this job

Well the vicodins are what just gets me out of bed and then through the day,

But I have been having a cold beer after I get out of the shower after these days of torture......I may finish my first 6 pack since the 1990's

Kurt if my kid ever came and helped Dad it would be putting the golf clubs in the car Rolling Eyes

I still do harder work and well I am not a youngster and have been on the IR since 2000

Mighty I think the next owner will have more fun since I did all the work wtf

Ok today (day 6) I finished ripping the rest of the shakes off the roof and put the plywood up and nailed it (oh and sprayed the roof with wicked bug killer before I put down the plywood)

Then put down the rest of the tar paper which once again was a major pain in the ass and the ladder tried it's best to make me crash to my death (it will be rebar in the future instead of the death ladder)

Stapled the hell out of it and caulked it in case it starts raining or I can't get out of bed in the morning.

So now I am hoping that Day 7 is when I can put down all the metal roofing and that 23ft piece across the peek......I can already tell they gave me more tar paper than I need and not even close to the right amount of screws so I will have to take a hour round trip to go get enough to finish this.

And THEN I get to mow the entire lawn which is already past due wtf

Then I think I will skip the rest of my summer projects and say fuck it and just sit out by the pond under the palm tree next to that concrete table I made last Fall....and maybe have a beer.
