No more conventional hard drives soon...
I was just reading in my Windows Vista Magazine today that the current format foryour computers hard drives will be going by the wayside very soon...
I guess Flash memeory is the next big thing for computers....they say it is a little expensive right now..(but we all know how that goes right?) but in the next couple of years it will be the industry standard.. especially in Laptops... since you can get much more memory in a much tighter space and it is much lighter as well....
I'll have to start looking for the new laptop I want I guess... LOL

Re: No more conventional hard drives soon...
Wow.
I've heard of those flash drives......they're probably more reliable than standard drives, eh? Although the solid-state drives are ultra-reliable and are increasing in capacity.

Thats what they are saying as far as the reliability issues.. and it's just a simple little plug in module too.
Pretty cool really...

Re: No more conventional hard drives soon...
The only issue I have is speed. The flash drive would have to be at least equal to a 7200 rpm spindel.....and a 10,000 rpm drive is upwards of 3 TIMES as fast as a 7200!!!!! I'm getting one of those soon. Those drives reduce boot-up time from approx. 15 seconds down to about 3 seconds

Ha! Wait until you turn 60! Memory? What's memory? Seriously, if you don't use it, you lose it. Mind exercises (one suduku puzzle and one crossword puzzle) every day for this old fart. Oh, and there's always the weekly mind bending exercise trying to pick a perfecta.

I got the Bosch Cravn....It was really pretty easy to install... I paid 1k for it but I think the tax credit is around 350-400 but don't quote me on that because I'm not 100% on it. It' plenty for my crib, and I have right around 2000 sq ft here in Avon... With 2 baths, and a dishwasher... it also has a digital thermostat so you don't scald the shit out of yourself too. Me and my dad put it in in less than a day.. But with the water heater and the programmable thermostat for the furnace I've cut my monthly gas bill almost in half so it's going to pay for itself in a year...
I'm very happy with it.
And get off that godforsaken dial-up at the homestead man!!!
There's lots of options out there!!!
WiMax IS coming though... And it's supposed to be the next generation internet so EVERYBODY can get a high speed connection no matter where they are.... and lots of electric utilities are supposed to coming out with some kind of connection that actually uses your homes WIRING even though I'm not sure how the whole deal works yer.

Who is your cell carrier Cravn?
I know Sprint and Verizon both carry the Novetell USB modem..(which is what I use to connect) But to get the high speed through them you have to be in an EVDO revA area..... it's pretty easyto check on them..
go to this forum EVDOfuroms and they can answer all your questions and get you the right set up for the homestead.. they are the best out there and have most of the answers and won't BS you about what is and what is not possible. I used to connect directly through my cell using a bluetooth connection.. but the USB modem is pretty useful.. They will have a link to an EVDO revA map that will show if your place is in fact covered for highspeed in your area.

Re: No more conventional hard drives soon...
Yep, I use bluetooth to get my PDA online through my cell phone, which costs $20 a month for unlimited data transfer.
If a PDA, then why not a desktop, eh?
Just make sure you have LOTS of minutes on your calling plan, though
