I had to spend your *Chips*
I drove over to Port Orchard yesterday to look at this new driving machine and decided to buy it and the guy delivered it to me for free last night (he dropped $200 so I got it for $1700)
1949 John Deere model A and he gave me a few gallons of Deere green and yellow paint to do the finish stuff when I can
It is officially retired.....just like me!

Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
Hell, I'd fire that thing up and go for a spin!! Maybe Henry Ford drove that thing.........
Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
I went to NAPA today and picked up a new oil filter and some oil but I just drained the old oil and put in the new stuff to run it one time and then drain and put in the new filter and oil in a couple days.
But I did take my first drive around the yard today and the wife fired off a bunch of pictures........I went around the front yard and back behind the house and it ran out of gas so I put in a few gallons I had for the lil Deere mower ($2.69 per gallon right now)
It started right back up and I cruised it around some more and tried the different gears and reverse and different speeds!
Lots of fun already
Glad I got this Deere!
I found out today from a guy that has an early 40's Deere that I was lucky the 1949 has the oil filter and the electric start!
You turn on a gas switch and flip the electric switch and pull the choke and push the gas lever forward and then stand on a starter peddle.......I can see why the old farmers are big 300lb guys because I couldn't just sit and step on that starter......I had to stand on it to make it work!!
Then to top off the fun drive I go to put the lil Deere away for the night and have to back the Jag out to fit the mower inside and I park it and get in the Jag to pull it back in and all of a sudden a BIG momma deer jumps out right in front of me and then turns and runs next to the building and LEAPS in the air and flys over the fence and does a bunch of those hops in the air as it runs through the tall grass and I had to get out and look at it and it was out in the other field staring at me with it's ears up.
But then one of those dumbass new neighbors across the road started firing a LOUD gun off over and over and the deer ran out of site north up the valley.
They need to meet the Desert Eagle
But the hippy farm on the 10 acres north of me is full of veggies so I hope it gets it's 2 babies over there to munch all night
Nothing Runs Like A Deere!

Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
I will do that Cravn.........parts are easier to afford restoring these old tractors than doing old cars for sure!
I have this catalog from Valu-Bilt Tractor Parts.......do you get discounts there?
LOL.......probably my first order will be a set of Deere emblems for the old 1949 model A.
I hope to start sanding and repainting parts real soon.
It seems like this tractor collecting thing happens in every state that has a farmer!
All different types........but John Deere is my type.
Doubt I will fit in with the hillbilly's when I go to a tractor show/swap but for some reason I like the old machines.
I watch that "Classic Tractor" show on RFDTV and it is usually Pennsylvania and Ohio farmers and all the States in your part of the planet.
Damn pouring down rain for the first time in august right now (even lost my satellite isp for a few)
And all I think about is my ol' Deere out sitting in the rain!
Well I hope the sun comes out because I have 850 golf *chips* to win on sunday

Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
Thats a fine looking old tractor Magic!!
and being here in Indiana theres LOTS of folks that rebuild them out here all the time....
My bro-in-law is working on an old Massey-Ferguson right now, I think the Deere parts are a heck of a lot easier to find than his 53 Massey....
Is yours a deisel or gas?
Now get you a nice pull behind bush hog and you can mow the Magic Kingdom in no time at all.

I had a tractor once. Got it for my 4th birthday. Had peddles and it could pull my red wagon

Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
Yeah I had that stuff when I was 4yrs old too =SA=
But I was still living in the city so I thought the only farm was my grandpa's place
It's a gas Deere R_Shock.........35hp 2 cylinder with the 5 1/2 inch pistons.
She's too wild to mow my golf course or putting green!
The guy told me it usually was still winning the tractor pulls at the show though and it was owned by the old guy that started the tractor club over in the Kitsap County area (it was his favorite tractor and he is now in John Deere Heaven so I am going to just bring it back to it's condition back in 1949)
It has the old guys name on one of those big back tires so I will leave that for him too
It will get the replacement of the original JD gauges with the real deal and that attachment that goes on the back so it will look like it is ready to hook up to any tractor gear.......but then it will be just to look at since she is a retired Deere now.
JD has been around for 200yrs now and they will never quit running like a Deere!!!
And you know after I paint it I will be posting a picture here

Re: I had to spend your *Chips*
LOl my first experiences "driving" was on an old 42 Massey bush-hogging fields for farmers.....
I miss those days....
A nice fattie, some earphones, something cold to drink and nobody to bother you all day long....
I shoulda been a farmer.....but buying retail and selling wholesale just didn't apeal to me that much I guess... LOL

Yeah I know it is the 3 point hitch but I always hear the farmers calling it an "attachment" when I watch "Classic Tractor" show on the dish.
I live in the country but I must be a city boy .........which explains why I have a 9 hole golf course on the property instead of animals and veggie gardens
My younger brother stopped by to look at it tonight and he is actually a country boy and collects tractors and actually knows how to rebuild them and does it all the time.
He just traded his Ford tractor for something (I forget what he said)
But he likes them too.
But I just talked him into buying an early 40's Deere that is for sale.
He has a few farmer type rigs to cut his grass and I have the fancy Deere with "spin steer" and even chrome wheel covers and a high-back seat
