Ah Yes the Fun of Downloading an OS
Especially when you do the windows update, java update, virtualbox update,nVidia drivers, and installing Boinc for Einstein and Cern.
The 109 file Win7 update is taking the longest of course.
Then the reboot when all of this fimally gets done.
BUT my first post is here
But then this is a pc that has just been asleep since september so I am just putting it back to work.
I also have to figure out how I am going to have all 7 online.
Laptop wirless always works but these goofy Belkin USB wirless things can't be trusted to stay online 24/7 so I may have to pick up a new box to run 8 at a time wired in.
.....back to it.......

Magic, I know you're the Mac enthusiast, so tell me.....should I upgrade from Snow leopard to Moutain Lion?
Maybe Gates will let me go from Snow Leopard to Win 7.
Remember the Macbook Pro I was given back in 2009? Maybe later this year I'll give it an overhaul....upgrade to an ssd, new optical drive (I ran the original drive into the dirt, makin' all kinds of racket ), new glass covering for the screen, new battery, upgrade to 8gb of memory....
And if necessary, any repairs to the uhhhh....."Logic Board". That's Mac lingo for Mother Board
This Apple is an excellent laptop to take on the road with me...I have a nice travel bag for it, all the goodies filling up all the pockets.
Although it takes getting used to a 15 inch screen...makes you feel claustrophobic when you're used to a 20"+ monitor.
But then again, I'll only use it when I'm on the road, so it'll do. I should have gotten the 17 inch model, but it was too much $$$...this was a gift, afterall.
C'mon, man.....give me some of dat True Mac Luv

I was born just a few miles from their headquarters.
Born at Stanford Hospital, lived in Cupertino during my first 5 years, then moved to Campbell.
Then later, I lived in Fremont and Newark.

And I was born and lived my younger days in Kirkland WA and when the parents would drive us a couple miles to Grannys we went through the Redmon intersection where there was nothing but trees and one tiny mom and pop store that was old in the 50's and now it is called
MICROSOFT CORP, 1 MICROSOFT WAY, REDMOND, Washington
300 acres and also surrounded by big rich people houses.
But I would still be a Microsoft guy if I was born in Yuma
Btw just did one of my last XP Pro updates since April 8th is the last day since the first week of November 2001

I have been using Linux Science for 10 years now but my job is making sure the data will work on Microsoft OS's
Funny thing is we tend to have problems with Linux and Mac users running the data tasks
But one of these days I may replace my XP Pros with the newest Linux version.
But then not even Microsoft was smart enough to keep letting us have Outlook Express on the other OS's
One thing for sure is when you install a new OS (or 2 like I just did) you better have started at the beginning of your day because after that and ALL the programs and drivers.........even I get blurry at 4am
I just deleted the Microsoft Security bs from this XP since I don't want anymore of these goofy messages and that thing was always a day late.......not that I have been buying many OS discs (2 in 15 years) and one of those was yesterday.
You should see my grid now........7 computers with 6 GeForce GPU processors and 30 cores of Intel and AMD
Not something you see at most peoples house

Scientific is great for specialized projects like you run Magic,
But I mean a true full fledged Desktop OS like Ubuntu, Mint or Fedora.
Ubuntu is basically pretty darn awesome these days, and it's newest version 14.04 LTS is going to be their best offering yet. And Mint is gaining popularity by leaps and bounds these days. It's worth a look. Especially for folks that like to have total control over their systems like we do.
I am currently dual booting win 8 and ubuntu on my home built SuperMachine and running Mountain Lion on Dell XPS ultra that I picked up for $600 at Best Buy (over half off SCORE) I Do so love it when some smug Machole starts talking up their air and I pull that out running their OS and tell them I only paid half the price and do all the same things they do LOL they humble pretty quickly lol

Yeah we don't need to mention which one that charges double the price as the rest for no reason at all (or do apples cost a lot at the grocery store too )
I just got home from a shopping trip and I picked up a CAT-5 cable and a lifetime guaranteed D-link 8 hub so I don't have to depend on the wireless USB I was using on one of them and my router only has 4 connections so now I can plug in 7 of them and only use the wireless for my nice laptop and the wife uses her cell phone and a couple other cheap tablets we have that she watches old movies and tv shows on while I watch science type stuff on the dish.
This way I don't have to check them all the time to make sure they have a connection every time they have data to send in to Max Planck or Cern
Sure is nice just plugging them in and working without having to install drivers too.
BUT I made a mistake the other day when I got that one pc back up and running with the Win7 disc I bought (it wouldn't boot with the XP disc I had but worked instantly with this one) but instead of loading all that OS and drivers and programs on a new never used HD I put it on the one that screwed up to begin with and it keeps having a screen of death shut down when I;m not watching so I will have to pick the next rainy day to do the entire damn thing again so I can trust it to run 24/7
It is an HP that I rebuilt a couple years ago (still use the AMD quad) but I added a 750watt UltraX and got a GeForce 550Ti on sale back then for $100 so after I do all of that again it should be back to new again after about 6 hours of me sitting there watching it......good thing I have the old leather couch upstairs with these computers
As far as using a Linux OS it would have to be the one with the least goofy name since I see all these different names that some of the Einstein crew use that I have to look them up to see wtf they are using
A lot on the top of the stats are Win7's but check out some of these processors http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/top_hosts.php?sort_by=expavg_credit

I would if you handed it to me......didn't you say it was a OS problem with booting up or something??
Or is it having actual hardware problems with the video card or HD or ram or power?

you need to get hold of ASUS and tell them to send you a disk, you bought the OS with the computer.
if you need an external dvd drive you can grab one at Newegg for $20.
Cant you do an f11 and get to the rescue partition?

Re: Ah Yes the Fun of Downloading an OS
Hell Crav I know I told you to do that a few weeks ago man!
It restores your pc to factory original so you just lose pics and docs you had saved there and programs you may have added over the years.
But it will work like new after you spend a few hours doing it.
Once it starts reinstalling the factory version of Windows you mainly just have to click the "enter" tab now and then until it is done.
I have done it a few times over the years.
Right now I am thinking about joining a group to sue Microsoft for some trick they just played with the final XP updates where it screws up your pc and you can't use system restore to erase the crap they are using to try and make you buy Windows 8 or 7......or a new computer since you can't install 8 on an older 86X 32 bit machine but you can use a 7 version to do that but of course you have to spend the almost $100 for a disc.
So they can buy me a new pc or give me a couple free 7 X86 32 bit OS discs.
They are trying to make businesses switch over their entire company computers.
And of course pisses off a guy like me that has just the 2 XP's and 4 Win7's and a fucking 8.1 so I sure don't need to buy a new one
Now they can just let me pick out a couple new pc's of my choice and pay for them and I will let them slide this time
Not going to tell anyone that 8.1 is better than XP Pro or 7 though.
It fucked up my 2 XP Pros that just do Einstein and Cern work and occasionally use my Outlook Express since it is still the best.
