*Supercomputers*
I have 6 computers here running 24/7 for CERN's Large Hadron Collider and Einsteins Arecibo Radio Telescope pulsars right now (and a 7th one most of the time from Seabirds house)
Built a new one about a month ago with a new power supply and the GeForce GTX 550Ti overclocked 192 Cuda card which now runs the Arecibo 20hr tasks in just 50 minutes!
BUT I am in the middle of building an even faster one now.
The UPS truck just delivered me a GeForce GTX 660Ti superclocked with 1334 Cuda cores (these are GPU's or graphics processors) and 8GB more Ram.
I installed the Ram since it takes just a couple minutes but I guess UPS won't be here with the 750watt power supply I ordered until monday and I can't plug in the new video card without a better power supply.
Can't wait to start testing this new beast.........it even works waaaaaaay better just making it run with 12GB Ram instead of just 4GB
(yeah I know ColtsShock is the only one that knows wtf I am saying here )

Nice very nice....
I've only got the one juiced up rig right now... But DAMN is it ever juiced....
You got me on the video card though.... I'm still running a GeForce 580 but it's still better than most have so I'm cool with it.
I'm thinking about getting another one and running it in an SLI rig though

I think he said the Big Brown truck made a timely delivery to his home, a new PC

Yeah I would have updated one of mine to SLI but mine are all pc's that I got a good deal on and then rebuilt them to be like they are now.
And none of my MoBo's have double rails so I went for this superclocked 660Ti
I would have used 2 GeForce GTX 550Ti's overclocked just because those 2 cards are still almost $100 cheaper than the 660
My new power supply will be here some time monday so I can get this one running and it is lifetime guaranteed and nVidia SLI certified.
One of these days I will build one from the ground up since I have several larger box's that will hold a better board with more CPU's and GPU's and at least 16GB ram
Intel has 3.5's that are unlocked so you can just have a good cooler and run those over 4.5

Well 2 of the parts I ordered that day got here fast but for some resason UPS is slow sending the power supply from Georgia then to Portland and now up here to Port Ludlow
Too bad it took 4 days to go from GA to Oregon.........should have went from Georgia to Seattle-Tacoma and then here.
But once it gets here all will be fine.

Re: *Supercomputers*
Cool,
I've been sticking with AMD here lately.... you can get their 8 core processor for under $200 ....
Right now I'm running a quad at 3.7, with 16GB of RAM with the 580 with a 256GB SSD as the boot drive and a 2TB HD for storage on the desktop and a 6TB Free NAS for network storage Since you have all those PC's Magic you really should check out Teamviewer for remote control for them. Kicks the crap out of VNC, MS Remote desktop and SSH.....
http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx I've been using it for about a year now and LOVE it.

ANd of course, I am viewing that wonderful PC with 2 22" monitors...
Even though I am thinking about buying 2 32" 1080p HDTV's and using those for monitors.... thinking it might be a little much, but when the hell did that ever matter?

Re: *Supercomputers*
I will check that out.
Most of mine are AMD"S too (2 quads and 2 triple) only problem is you can't overclock them.
That is why I decided the best way to speed them up was getting the GeForce in 2 of those quads and the 550Ti overclocked is great and only $100 and was going to get another one but when I saw the 660Ti super I just happened to have an extra $300 so TigerDirect got another order from me
I only use 3 monitors for the 5 desktops and one of them is the old CRT and a couple flatscreens and I am pretty good at switching the cable back and forth since that is the free way of doing that and the 2 with the GeForce are side by side with the back panel facing me and the side panel off to keep them cool since they only get to rest if the power goes out.
I like the GeForce in this laptop too.......the GPU's process these 20hr Einstein Cuda tasks in just over 2 hours and the quad has that Turbo Boost.
The 550Ti does them in 50mins........so I bet that 660Ti is going to be fast.
And it sure works nice plugged in to my 82in DLP

Re: *Supercomputers*
Well check out the Teamviewer then Magic!
As long as those machines are on the network, you could run them headless, and manage them remotely from a laptop if you wanted to... LOL Makes life MUCH easier.....
Adn teamviewer is freeware as long as you aren't using it for commercial use. It's pretty darn awesome.

Re: *Supercomputers*
Yeah that could come in handy for me since running 6 computers and doing work after midnight every night would be easier if I could do it from the laptop instead of running upstairs at 1:30am to update and check the other 5.....but then I would still end up going to look just in case.
BTW your GeForce 580 would work great for my Einstein grid with those 512 Cuda cores

Re: *Supercomputers*
4am and I am up and testing the new system
Intstalled the 12GB ram the other day and today installed the 750watt Ultra X4 power supply (that comes with a bunch of extras)
And now I installed the new GeForce 660Ti superclocked card and installed the drivers on the disc they give you and it was running fine so I got over 100 Einstein Cuda's (Binary Radio Pulsar Arecibo) and am close to finishing the 2nd task so far and at the same time downloading the new drivers for the card (hope that doesn't screw anything up)
Wish I could overclock the quad-core too (AMD Athlon II X4 635)

Re: *Supercomputers*
Well on friday UPS should be coming up the driveway with more parts for me to build my 3rd supercomputer so that will leave only 2 or my 6 machines as just average (they are 3-core so that is why they will stay that way)
And added a 4GB Ram for Jr's laptop and will install that for him (I guess I will call that his 30th birthday present even though he can't seem to do his picks here)
So here is what I will add to a quad-core (it is a Acer in a box so small I am not sure yet if the video card and more Ram will actually fit yet) but the new power supply doesn't have to go inside the box so that doesn't matter.
Corsair High Perform Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz2x4
ULTRA X4 750W POWER SUPPLY MODULAR
EVGA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 2GB PCIe 2.0 SLI (Fermi)
Hopefully the parts fit in the lil Acer so I can get it back up and running in a few minutes and then it will be running Einstein cuda tasks along with the other cuda GPU supercomputers.
(yeah I know you don't know wtf I am talking about )

All I know is that I've seen Cuda listed several times and that's all it takes to trip my trigger. My '70 'Cuda with the 340 was one beautiful biotch! Beautiful purple... the ONLY thing that will E-V-E-R look good in purple.

Yes all my video cards are purple........like the Lakers
Cuda is something some video cards have for using GPU's to do the work of a processor......just faster......like your Cuda

Re: *Supercomputers*
Yeah when I got my laptop last June it was one of them that gives you the Win 8 disc for $14.99 or you can download it.
I don't want to d/l it and when I tried to fill out the order it froze up on the credit card page
I might give it another try but from what I see I really don't want to install it.......I'll just leave the Win 7 on here since it's main job is data processing for Cern and using the cuda card for the Einstein project.
Still looking for a good deal on another nVidia Geforce and PS and some Ram for another quad-core I have to add to the other 4 I have using GPU for cuda.
Probably get another 550Ti 2GB if it is around $100 with free shipping
Lot of the fellow mad scientisits run linux with the GPU's
And we use Linux Science at Cern
