Re: Ran out of ideas
Cravn,
We've talked about St. Martin before. If you ever decide to go there, go to the French side of the island. Maho, near the airport, is a busy stretch of businesses and that's about it. There is an interesting bar, however, at the end of the road past the runway. The entertainment seems to be watching the planes land.
Now if snorkeling is a requirement I've gotta say St. Martin is not your place. The only decent snorkeling is off Pinel Island. That's on the French Side near Orient Beach (that would be the nude beach if that interests you) where you can catch a boat out to Pinel (takes about 15 minutes).

If you go to St. Martin, rent a car and tour the island and its beaches. You can circle the island in a day easy.
Blue's right. We've beat the island to death on here. If you don't check it out sometime, you're beyond help!

Sure... Vegas! Lots going on their other than just gambling... and racing.
Crav, when I'm on vaca... that is the least of my concern. You've already dropped large coin for the trip... you gonna worry about a few more bucks here and there? You already know you're going to go over budget.
C'est la vie! Have fun and worry about that part later!

Re: Ran out of ideas
Cravn,
Here's where Nancy and I stayed our last 5 years or so whenever we went to St. Martin. It's on the French side sitting down in a cove that is well protected (the drive down is interesting). A very nice resort and beach. Quiet and isolated. At the time it was Le Meridien but it's now a Radisson.

If you choose St. Martin be sure to book something on the French side. Much better roads and great restaurants for eating in the Marigot and Grand Case areas. For hotels, I believe the tax rate is 5% on top of the daily rate. In December (high season) you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $350/day. There are several very nice resorts on Orient Bay. That's the nude beach however and it tends to draw a crowd of bused-in tourists.
For top of the line treatment (and an $800+/day rate for two) choose La Sammana.
Like Kurt says, don't sweat the bucks just do it.

Re: Ran out of ideas
I'll back Blue 100%... The Radisson Blu is, without a doubt, the coolest place on either the Dutch or French side of the island.
We didn't stay there, but found it basically by mistake. We just followed a dirt road up the side of a mountain. Came around a bend, and there it was below us. Pretty much like the picture on the website... stunning.

Sounds like a personal problem... for the kids.
