Puter Help
Microsoft did an automatic update yesterday morning on me...After it was complete, it told me to restart, which I did, when it restarted it went into reboot, and automatically re booted to day 1...Now it wont recognize my modem, I took out the modem, turned it on and loaded the drivers, shut it down, then installed the modem, restarted and nothing...the strange thing, is I open the control panel, click on modems, and the modem is not there..But in my system tray, it says it found new hardware, and shows the modem and its description.
Any clues???

Does it say installing new hardware, when it is in the system tray?

It should be working then, you might be able to go back to your last restore point before that last update and go from there though.

Re: Puter Help
Cravn you should never, never, never, have automatic update turned on.
Also there are fake updates (trojan virus) that will make you think it is an update when in fact it is trying to do what just happened.
In fact a weak old virus from a few years ago did exactly what just happened to you.
Do a system restore as far back as it will let you.
Hopefully system restore does work and was not part of the probable virus.
Then if it does work turn off auto-update so in the future if any fake box pops up trying to play a trick you will not fall for it.
You have to watch out if you are clicking on links/sites that are not safe.
Free security is ok for basic stuff but unless you have a OS disc to do a clean reinstall you can get screwed no matter what OS you are using or browser.
(which ones are you using? )
Good luck with the system restore.

Re: Puter Help
Oh hell Cravn you can find links like that every day about anything you want to look up.
That isn't what happened to you and that free security you use just seems to be good and you usually only get rid of cookies instead of a virus.
The fact is that since your system restore won't go back before the 14th that means you got some type of trojan or malware.
Do you have the OS disc?
You can try and run a trendmicro online "Housecall" to scan and fix it unless your pc blocks them.
It is a bit slow to download if you have to use a dialup.
Here is the link.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download HouseCall 7.1 (32-bit)
After the download run the scan and it will tell you what you have and may be able to fix it.

Re: Puter Help
LOL, I take it to The Geeks, he hooks it up, runs a diagnostic test..Hes puzzled, he said for him to go further, it would be 75.00..I question what hes looking for, and he tells me modem properties, drivers etc..
So right next to the counter, they are having a sale on MODEMS, 29.00 LOL I tell him forget it, I see a cheaper way to fix this..
Alright Wild Bill, problem #2..Everything on the monitor is double in size, I went up top to "View" and the medium size is checked, I changed it to "Small"...Nothing
I also have a scroll bar from side to side, something Ive never had before..
Any suggestions??

Re: Puter Help
Well it should say "safe mode" if it is.
The normal way is just doing a reboot.
Of course that would screw up the downloading of Housecall.
Let that finish and run it and see what it says.
Of course if you are online doing that your modem is working

Re: Puter Help
Cravn it sounds like you might be better off just re-installing windows (and wiping the HD). Do you have your rescue discs for your version of Windows? If so download a program called DBAN and make an ISO CD out of that, then use it to wipe the HD and then just do a fresh install of Windows.

OK, so you should be able to create a set of rescue discs then. You have a rescue partition that is part of windows..... Are you running Vista? And what Make of computer are you using?

OK, go to Emachines webpage, and they should have the instructions there on how to make a rescue disc for your make and model computer. (I don't remember how to do it) but they will have the instructions there... Also if your computer didn't come with an OS disc, they HAVE to provide you with a copy of the OS if you request it, I mean you have already PAID for that when you bought the computer. I would just get a nice big external HD, back up the files that are most important to you wipe the HD with DBAN and re-install. Or you COULD go to ubuntu.com and download a nice open source OS.
