Are we doing the Turkey Day Special this year?

If so, here's what the rule currently says:

Thanksgiving Day
Continuing the Turkey Day tradition in the BC, it is mandatory to handicap all the games played this day. This year there are ?? games, so we'll select ?? Best Bets and a Parlay consisting of ?? Over/Unders. One bonus point is awarded for hitting a Perfecta. Turkey Day is considered an independent "weekend" and is separate from the upcoming weekend's handicapping.

It turns out this year we'll make 3 Best Bets, and have a Parlay consisting of two Best Bets and one O/U. The Turkey Day rules are flexible, so this works fine.

So each Best Bet will be worth 1 point, and the Parlay will be worth 1 point. A True Perfecta receives 1 bonus point.

Best Bet = 1 point each.
Parlay = 1 point.
Perfecta = 4 points.
True Perfecta = 5 points.


Definition of Perfecta and True Perfecta:

Perfecta = hit all Best Bets, and a Parlay that consists of 2 of those games, plus also selecting one of the Parlay games as your O/U.

True Perfecta = hit all Best Bets, and a Parlay that consists of 2 of those games and then selecting the 3rd game as your O/U (the game you didn't select in your Parlay).



These rules are slightly different than last year, but it still works fine.

As to the stats, I plan on creating a separate column to hold the total points for each player for Thanksgiving. I will NOT include the results in the YTD Best Bets nor will a Thanksgiving Parlay count in the YTD Parlay totals (since a Thanksgiving parlay earns only one point instead of the normal three). Otherwise it makes it impossible to reconstruct total points for a player.

So, going forward the YTD total points will be calculated as follows:

- Best bet winner count from the YTD Best Bets
- Plus number of Parlays x 3
- Plus Thanksgiving day points earned
- Plus 2 X the number of True Perfectas for a player as indicated by the number of asterisks after his/her name

I just remembered that last year the Parlays were worth the normal 3 points for the very reason Blue mentioned.....so we didn't have to keep separate stats for Turkey Day. For whatever reason, when I said Turkey Day Parlays are worth 1 point, I was applying the playoff scoring format (when Parlays are worth 1 point).


So......Blue, let's give it a big K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid)

So, a Perfecta would be 6 points. What about a True Perfecta? For consistency, I'd think 8 points but I need that confirmed.

Blue, since the Turkey Day format is flexible, let's not give an additional bonus point for a True Perfecta this year. The reason being that it was much easier to hit a True Perfecta this year since we only had to pick one O/U in our Parlay (instead of all the games).

So let's make a True Perfecta worth the normal 7 points this year.

3 Best Bets worth 1 point each = 3 points.
1 Parlay worth 3 points.
1 normal bonus point for hitting a True Perfecta.

Therefore......this year's Turkey Day True Perfecta scores 7 points.

A normal Perfecta will be worth 6 points.



How's that sound?

Well, again, this will make it difficult to confirm total points since the true perfecta for Thanksgiving would be different from a normal true perfecta. I've already posted the results assuming 8 points -- everyone had the same chance to go for it and hit it. I'd prefer sticking with 8.

Oh, I think I see what you mean. You're saying a TP should score 8 points because Turkey Day had 3 Best Bets instead of 2, right?

One of the things that's different with Turkey Day is that there's almost always a different number of games played each year. Last year there were 4 games, but this year there's only 3.

This is why Thanksgiving Day is flexible.....it's almost always different!!


So the way I see it, it really doesn't matter how many points we award on Thankgiving Day.....since we all have an equal chance to score.


So we may as well keep it the way Blue has already tallied up the points.


Besides, most of us tanked our picks anyway
