My Vikings Draft Board Empty Re: My Vikings Draft Board

Post  Agent 99 4/10/2008, 11:37 am

Since we're on the topic of Draft Day.......

We all know that we are without a first round pick this year. Which I don't see as a bad thing. It will save us some cap room down the line. As I see it now.... It looks like we have a total of 9 picks in the 2008 draft. Starting in the Second Round with pick #59, Third Round pick #93, Fourth Round pick #127, Fifth Round pick #161, Sixth Round pick #196 - #201 - #202(Compensatory Selection) - #205(Compensatory Selection) and the final pick in the Seventh Round at #236. We have watched Polian and the organization draft their way to the Superbowl and I see no reason why it won't be any different this year.

I did a little research and here are a few players taken from some of the Draft websites out there.

Second Round.....

**Chris Johnson RB E. Carolina**
Clearly this isn't a major need for the Colts, but they're in the position to take the best available player, which could be Johnson. He'll have an immediate impact as a return man and provide a nice change of pace for Joseph Addai. If the Colts are targeting a specific position, it could be a LB, DL or OL. Johnson is one of the best athletes in this draft class and one of the fastest players in the nation (4.27-40). He is an outstanding receiver out of the backfield, Johnson runs crisp routes and will extended his hands to catch the ball away from his body. On athletic ability alone, Johnson is worth a first or second round selection. He can take it to the end zone every time he touches the ball. Also, a great kick returner, Johnson will contribute immediately as a KR and change of pace back. He is a little undersized and could lack durability at the pro level.

Quentin Groves, Defensive End, Aurburn
The Colts should look to improve their defense and Groves could be the best defensive player left on the board. He also spent significant time at outside linebacker, all of which impacted his stats -- 38 tackles (23 solo), seven tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He ranks second in the nation among active players with 26 career sacks. Speed is Groves' strength. He runs a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and has a good closing burst. He can cover a lot of ground with his quickness, which makes him good in pursuit. He's a great tackler. The ony questions about him start with his tendency to take plays off and he has a tendency to be slow off the ball. Many scouts project Groves as a linebacker in the NFL, with him likely better suited for a 3-4 scheme.

Cliff Avril, DE, Purdue
Avril really helped his draft stock by way of the combine. Avril ran a 4.51 40 yard dash, which was one of the fastest times by a front seven defender.
Avril also made a good showing at Purdue's pro day in West Lafayette. Avril looked good running position drills as both a defensive end and as an outside linebacker. Avril also displayed a 36 1/2 inch vertical leap. He also got a chance to display his change of direction speed in the short shuttle, finishing it in 4.31 seconds.

Erin Henderson, OLB, Maryland
We never really recovered from letting Cato June leave and join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We already released Rob Morris, who was our starting weak side linebacker entering the season. Erin Henderson would be ideal to step in the weakside linebacker mold for the Colts defensive scheme.

Third Round.....

Chris Ellis, Virginia Tech DE
Ellis came into the Combine at 263 pounds, which is a little smaller that what most teams like.. That gave him a nice 40 time, but this is a player that most teams will want to fill in his frame with a little more girth and strength. He definitely has the speed to beat tackles around the end, but he will likely have to add a little weight and hopefully not lose any of that speed. It’s obvious we tend to look for the undersized players. He could be a possibility.

Darrell Robertson, DE, Georgia Tech
Robertson is projected as a third round pick at the moment. If he can prove to NFL teams that he can gain strength without losing any speed, his stock will go up considerably. Also he didn't get to attend the Combine because of a torn Pectoral muscle.

Dre Moore, Maryland (DT)
Defensive tackle has been a huge need for Colts for a couple years now and we haven’t been in a position where they could really address the need. Moore could definitely step in and see significant playing time early playing behind Raheem Brock and Ed Johnson. Moore could play the defensive end in a 3-4, or a traditional defensive tackle in a 4-3. He was one of a few defensive tackles who improved their stock at the NFL Combine. Moore ran a solid 4.88 40, which is not bad for a tackle. He also ranked among the top d-lineman in the bench press.

Philip Wheeler-LB-Georgia Tech
His versatility will get him a long look from a few teams and he could be a steal for the right team in the third round. Wheeler had one of the better overall combines of any linebacker.

Fourth Round

Jeremy Zuttah, G, Rutgers
At only 6'3, 295, there are some doubts about where he will fit best on the line and if and how much he'll have to bulk up to hold his own on the next level. But, he showed that he certainly has the necessary strength, quickness and athleticism. He played both left and right tackle at Rutgers and could very well move inside and play guard or even center in the NFL.

Dorien Bryant-WR-Purdue
Bryant didn't have a good Combine and could fall to the Forth of Fifth Round.

Fifth Round and Beyond

Jason Jones-DE-Eastern Michigan

Andre Fluellen-DT-Florida State

John Sullivan-C-Notre Dame

Mike McGlynn, G/OT, Pittsburgh

William Franklin WR, Missouri

I love the draft...I dont know if taking Henderson, it could be a reach..He is nothing like his brother EJ, and his 3 years at Md, he didnt lite the Terp Football world up,

Now if you guys are looking at RB, I would definately give Latimer (from Maryland) a hard look..Magic, will love him.

He's Ray Lewis's brother
