PostSubject: Computers are a pain in the ass   4/28/2011, 12:13 pm

Well now I have 4 of them in front of me and this is the first post from the one I got 24hrs ago.

One of those "special" deals.......AMD 2.9 quad-core HP

The problem is it wouldn't work without freezing over and over.

I found out right away it needed about 70 Windows updates including SP1

That took hours and hours to load and reboot over and over......

And some drivers had to get updated and I didn't check all of them yet.

I have 89 more days to call and tell them to take it back but my luck is I will spend days fixing the bastard until it works good enough to sit here doing it's work.

Good thing this was only about $450 or I would have called and bitched at some dumbass over in India lol

.....ok let me see if this will work when I hit the send tab......

WIn7 Pro? Probably MS's best OS ever imho.....

Did you flash the Motherboard as well Magic? Thats the first thing I do when I get a new box these days..

I'm thinking about starting a new AMD build because I am wanting something with USB 3.0 (5GB a second data transfer) and Esata

And of course a Nice SSD for the booth drive and then get about 6TB set up in Raid 0 for mass storage...

I want the Hexacore CPU though... AMD's is about $250 while Intels is typically overpriced at about $1000...

This is a Windows 7 home premium with the AMD Athlon 635 quad-core 2.9 ...just 4GB RAM (my other one has 8GB)

700GB HD which is fine since I don't use them to save much and with all 4 running I try to burn a disc just to save pictures and I also have always used my Hotmail account to save things for the last 12 years and everything is still there lol

This seems to be working like it should but I don't use it to mess around much just because if it does freeze and I have to reboot it will screw up my Test for Theory program I run and since each Unit is 12 hours I don't like to reboot and lose hours of time.

But when I get time I will always see what I can do to get this thing working smoothly.

Win7 does have several things I like but I wish they saved a few XP Pro things I still use on my other 2 pc's that I still prefer.

Like Outlook Express and the "my pictures" and "documents" files work better for what I do.

But these 2 HP's with Win7 do have tests for all the components and then the security updates and HP also has a quick link to check for updates that are fast....and free.

I just hope these 2 quads with Win7 will run non-stop doing these Theoretical Physics Computations non-stop 24/7 so they can get plenty of tests run because right now my 2 triple cores running with XP Pro are the #1 and #2 computers on the planet right now doing this Alpha test.

You should see some of the computers these guys are running along with me.

12-core and 8-core computers and lots of quads......and of course hard-core computer and physics geeks.

The 3 physicists I am working with just made a trip from Geneva to Brazil for conferences leaving me to do all the work and help the others when they have problems.

Well I happen to have the .iso image for Windows 7 Pro... (the student edition) 64 bit.... let me know if you want a copy..... I can burn you one or maybe dropbox it....... You would just have to come up with a key.... or use the WAT removal tool you can find online and use that. I just can't give MY key out or they will disable it after too many activations... But it's a good clean disk without any of the pre-installed bullshit that manufacturers throw in there.

Interesting smile

I may need to do something like that with this one (Windows7 Premium X64)

This WAT program looks like a good one too.

You ever try this one?

I am still having freeze problems on this one and after all the updates I have done it must be a registry problem.

Nerd? LOL!!

CK I am surprised at you! But I have figured out that between Bill Gates and Zuckerburg and the google boys that nerds run the world... LOL

But Magic let me know if you want that .iso... Hell I could just burn a DVD and mail it to the magic kingdom if you want...

The WAT removal tool you listed would probably work... especially since it says you can run updates and just run the tool again afterwards.

But it's Derby weekend gentleman, I get to give some more money away to Churchill Downs... lol
