Hell, my first year on the net in 98, I ran a new Compaq without any antivirus or firewall. I was all over the place.....chat rooms, porn sites. And since I knew nothing about viruses and all that stuff, I thought it was normal for my machine to be acting weird. That old Compaq had a 3.5 gig hard drive (full of funky trojans and worms) and a processor that ran about 500mhz. I was still using that machine when I first made my way to the ESPN boards in 99. It was a glorious day when I upgraded to my first Dell, I'll always remember that. I was all over the Colts board boasting my new hardware.....40 gig drive, 1.5 gig Pentium 4.

I called it my "Dream Machine" I will drink to that

Ha! I'm an old coot, I know.

My first "dream machine" was an original IBM PC purchased in February of 1982. Must have been something like serial number 100. I had to drive to Philly to pick it up at the IBM center down there -- no Circuit City, Dell, or Computerland's at the time. It had a whopping 64K of memory (and that was an upgrade), two single-sided floppy drives, and a color graphics card that gave me a full 320x200 resolution!!! Wow! Couldn't buy a graphics monitor at the time so I used a 10" color Panasonic TV. And, the only "audio" available was from the 2" internal speaker. I paid over $3000 for that system!!! Things have come a long way in 24 years.

Interesting interview inside with Bill Gates and what he (then) saw as the future of home computing and Microsoft.

Had to dig around a bit to find the publishing date. The Premiere Issue of PC Magazine was dated February-March, 1982.

Interesting to see some of the ads in this thing. For example, a Winchester external Hard Disk subsystem for $3395!! And for those kind of bucks you got 9.5 megabytes of storage capacity! Also, a 64k memory card for $495.

In the article with Bill Gates he tells about Microsoft's initial work with IBM on the MS-DOS operating system and it mentions "35 of the 100 Microsoft employees worked on it".

Just imagine what the world would be like if Steve Jobs from Apple hadn't of pissed Bill Gates off and snubbed him way back when... And Gates hadn't of stolen windows from Apple and they had actually worked together..

Those prices are OUTRAGEOUS!!! But i do remember when my school got 4 brand new Apple IIc's and they introduced us to computers with those things. LOL

Here's a good one for you guys... I was watching my neice and nephews last weekend and an old black and white episode of the Lone Ranger came on when I was out of the room.. They came running into the kitchen telling me about how my big-screen was broken because the color had gone out LOL.... I remember our frst Atari 2600 was played on an ANCIENT B/W tv with a coat hanger Antenna and you had to use a pair of pliers to change the channel LOL Spoiled kids!!! LOL

Reminds me of how satellite TV started out.

When I built my first one in 1982 it was expensive even when I just had all the parts shipped via truck and had to put it all together and make it work and all the channels were free......and now you get those little dishes for free and installed free and get 4 recievers!

But then they charge you over $1000 every year just to watch a few channels you like bs

I first got in a room full of computers back in 1986 and didn't like anything about them since it was just being used for company records and data (Electronic Data Service company)

No web yet so I didn't even get interested until Jan. 1999 and did all that stuff Mighty mentioned and then figured out all the tricks (more to come of course) and then decided to check the sports news for my teams and sure enough I met a bunch of other peeps doing the same thing smile

And now I have spent many thousands on these things just to keep getting the top of the line versions (I'm on my P4 3.2 dual processor with 300gig HD and 1,250gig Ram right now)

I wonder if any of them still work? Or let me ask you this... maybe we can't hack DTV's signal anymore, but would it possible to hack through to say HBO's sattelite and such... Hmmmmmm

The first computer I ever saw in 1970 at Texas A@I University in Kingsville Texas. It was huge and they had these stacks of cards everywhere. I just remember saying I'm not taking that class :<( Looking back that was probably a big mistake.

My guy had told me he could get it to run for about 6hours to 24 hours and then it hit the card really hard. Haven't checked back with him lately though.. Plus I'd have to rebuy all new equipment too, as I've heard all the old bootstraps and the loaders were pretty much junk now. Let me know if somebody gets it right though.... The thing is if somebody DOES get the hack right, if DTV looses thousans of paying customers in a short time they'll hit the stream again...

Post  Magic 11/15/2006, 5:56 pm

Nah you would have been ok skipping that stuff =SA=

The best way was to get involved in the late 80's and early 90's because learning that ancient stuff would do you no good now days.

Even the original Microsoft and apple stuff would not do much for your skills.

I started messing with Windows 95 and went to 98 and 98SE and then jumped to XP Pro and Home and then spent all my free time figuring out codes and Microsoft info and HTML and BBcodes and text tricks and even used my old C-band satellite dish to find info for free so I never payed for anything but these pc's and isp's

And if you check the espn board I am the only one that has figured out a bunch of new tricks and for some reason nobody has figured out wtf I do and only one guy even asked......and I didn't give this one out yet king

Just check my threads on either the Colts board or the Lakers board and you will see some one of a kind posts mischief

I have this strange thing going on with Dish Net right now.

My original reciever started screwing up and we found out it had not been giving us all the channels we payed for (channels we actually don't care about like 75% of the ones we have to pay for to get the ones we do want)

So we call and they tell us because that happened they will send us the new model reciever and we would not have to pay for it or a monthly fee either.

So when it showed up I hooked it up and then after a while we see on the bill they charged us $5 a month for the reciever.

We call back and call bullshit on em and after an hour on the phone they say they will send a new version of the old original rec. and when it shows up I was supposed to hook it up and send em back the one they sent.

Well the new/old one would not work when I connected it so while on the phone I unplug it and put the newer version back on and they say they will mail another one via UPS.

The wife gets pissed that we now have 3 Dish Net rec. and only the one they are charging us for will work........so she calls and bitches em out and asks for the supervisor and says she will report them to the BBB and sue them and all the rest.

So then they say they will go ahead and let us have the new version for free but to do that they would have to send us another one and we would then get it installed and checked to make sure it works and then send them back the other 3 recievers that they had sent us!!!

For some reason they can't just type it into our account thet we get the first one with no charge so instead they send us 3 others and then we install the exact same new version and they pay the shipping both ways!!!

THAT explains why they rip us off just to watch one channel at a time and never watch %75 of the damn worthless BS

During the storm today the UPS guy showed up with the new version again and as I was thinking of switching over to that one the wind hit the 60mph mark and we lost the power for the next 5 hours.

The only good thing that happened is the power went out because trees fell on the lines down the driveway of that lying jackass criminal that lives across the street from me (he lost his run for sheriff the other day 80% to 19% ) and the power company hooked our power up before dark and then drove away and left his lines laying down his driveway with his trees.....too bad he didn't step on a hot line in a mud puddle when I saw him walking out rambo

Yeah Magic, it seems like the DBS providers really hit folks hard now. They don't want to do anything thats not going to be 100% profit. I've actually been thinking about switching to Dishnetwork because of their receivers though. 1 receiver controls 2 tv's now... thats pretty sweet.

Yep, DTV isn't cheap, but the programming is a hundred times better than it was 5 years ago. Lots of great stuff on Science, NG, Discovery, Military......

And of course.....NASA sunny

Some interesting religion channels, too......especially the CID channel:
Conver to Islam or Die.

Things I miss from when the "net" was new.... Hangingmanky2
This is actually a photo of an islamic sleeper agent, Saudi immigrant Usum LaSaud Mohommed Alesh, after he made the grave mistake of coming to the United States, getting off the plane and then standing upon the sacred ground of America. His soiled spirit was immediately recognized and rejected. So he was hauled off to 4275 River Street in Boise, Idaho (the location of the photo above), and was strung up as a warning to other muslims......"Get Out And Don't Come Back".
