How does Amazon do it?
That company is why got hired at UPS and to think in 88 they only carried books and cd's and music items.
Now we get everything via Amazon, Saturday I ordered a water filter for our frig, now this was Saturday 2:30 in the afternoon, Monday afternoon the package is on our porch, return label was from Kentucky. Oh and it was free shipping. I don't understand the logistics in that. Not only did it ship free, but that GE water filter runs 55 dollars at any Walmart, home depot or Lowe's, Amazon had it for 21 bucks.
I also ordered a driver's side window motor and tracking, which will be here today, it left Cali on Wednesday, so now I have my Sunday project, that piece at any auto parts store was 135-185, Amazon had it for 85 plus had it in stock, plus it was the exact name brand as Napa or advanced sold. And those 2 stores didn't have it in stock and told me 2 weeks to get it.
I found my new best friend in Amazon, we've just dabbled with it for painting the concrete deck around the pool. There are just too many questions on the paint I need answers to, slip resistance, heat control etc..

Re: How does Amazon do it?
Amazon does this by letting companies sell stuff via Amazon and that gives those companies business they never would have got before.
Amazon doesn't always have the best price but they do most of the time.
They don't make anything but they do have BIG storage places and deals with shipping companies and the companies that sell stuff from the Amazon site.
I got the pellet stove fan from Amazon but it was actually coming from a company that sells the parts down in Cali with free shipping thanks to the deal they do with Amazon.
Amazon started in Seattle but they now have these HUGE storage buildings around the world.
in New York City, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Dallas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle. Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia .....and China

Re: How does Amazon do it?
I think I mentioned earlier that our household's past two Christmas' have been 80% purchased via Amazon, due to the wife's surgeries.
The Amazon operation here is huge. Should (when) they get the approval, rumor is we're supposed to be one of the first markets for drone delivery.
We have Prime. Kids even use our account. Just beginning to explore the music that comes along with it. Movies too, but we're not ones to sit and watch a movie.
Attended my third HS Bball game in five nights tonight. Sectional play in the state tournament. The bride's school (she's the athletic dept. secty for 16-17 yrs) ended the season ranked 3rd in big school. They're good. I think we'll be going to games right up to the end. I think she's getting another state championship ring.
But, they're 16-18 yo kids. Never know whats going to happen.
They're now 21-3. One loss was to the team they beat tonight. Another to the team they play Saturday morning.
Good stuff.

What is the difference in prime and the acct I have had since the late 80's?
And I'm totally kicking myself in the ass a couple of months ago my left side rear wheel bearings went up. So working at Penske, I used Napa and the dude gave me our discount. It came to 90 dollars..Amazon has the identical one for 48 bucks..

No idea whatsoever... Its a wife-thing. It was $75 initially, now $99/year.

Re: How does Amazon do it?
I'm a Prime member (about $105/year). Most items are identified as "Prime" items. If your order is for a "Prime" item, you get guaranteed 2-day shipping free. I've ordered stuff on Friday and they drop it off on Sunday. I have never had a Prime item take more than 2 days including my latest flat screen Samsung TV.
In addition to 2-day free shipping the Prime membership gets you a free Kindle eBook a month, and online streaming movies and TV shows (like Netflix) for free.
I ordered over $3000 in items from Amazon last year and save a bundle on shipping costs, more than covering my subscription. I find myself ordering stuff simply to avoid a drive to the mall.

Re: How does Amazon do it?
Cool deal, I'll keep prime in mind. I'm still in disbelief how I ordered that water filter on a Saturday afternoon and it was on my porch Monday morning from Kentucky.
Now if I can only get the Mrs to direct ship instead of getting stuff delivered to our house then she runs to the post office and ships it North. Shipping costs at the post office and UPS are ridiculous. They have went to a zone system, and charge you how many zones your package cross. I think it cost me 65 dollars to ship 3 small packages for Valentine's day.

We've ordered something at 8:00 pm using Prime and the free 2 day delivery... and have it on the porch after work THE NEXT DAY!
