For the playoffs, it's no longer the case where the team winning the coin toss in OT can simply march down the field, kick a field goal and walk off the winner.

Now both teams must have the opportunity to possess the ball once, unless the team that receives the kickoff scores a touchdown on its initial possession. In that case, the game is over.

If the opening drive results in a field goal, the opponent has the opportunity to possess the ball. If that team scores a touchdown on its possession, again, it's game over.

If the score is tied after each team has a possession, it's sudden death. Next score wins it.

The phrase "opportunity to possess the ball" refers to kicking plays. If the team kicking off to begin overtime recovers an onside kick, that constitutes an opportunity to possess the ball by the receiving team. The team that recovered the onside kick can then win with a field goal.
